What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find an antiderivative of the given function. They evaluate it at the upper and lower bounds, then subtract the lower result from the upper result.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find a correct antiderivative, substitute both bounds, and calculate F(b) minus F(a). They keep signs and fractions accurate and can check whether the result fits the graph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the subtraction and calculate F(a) minus F(b). They may forget the constant factor in an antiderivative, ignore negative signed area, or add an unnecessary constant.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Evaluate ∫ from -1 to 2 of (3x² - 2x) dx. Show the antiderivative and both endpoint substitutions.

Have students shade signed area on graph paper for y=2x+1 from x=0 to x=3, then verify it using an antiderivative.
