- Students use a definite integral of a rate function to find the net change in an accumulated quantity. They connect signed area with initial value, final value, and units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a rate graph, table, or formula, students can compute or estimate the integral and explain its meaning in context. They can use an initial amount and the net change to find a final amount.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often count every area as positive, confusing net change with total change. They may report the integral as the final amount instead of adding it to the initial amount. They may also use the rate’s units rather than accumulated units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A tank starts with 120 liters, and ∫₀³ r(t) dt = −18 liters. Find the amount after three hours and explain what −18 means.
