What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide an interval into equal parts and use function values at left endpoints, right endpoints, or midpoints as rectangle heights. They connect the sum of those rectangle areas to the definite integral as the rectangles become narrower.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find the equal interval width and select the correct left, right, or midpoint inputs. They calculate the sum accurately and explain that increasingly narrow rectangles approach the exact definite integral.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may forget to multiply the sum of the heights by the interval width. They may confuse the number of subintervals with the number of endpoints or use x-values instead of function values as heights. They may also assume left sums always underestimate and right sums always overestimate.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “For f(x) = x² on [0, 2], use four equal subintervals to find the midpoint sum. Explain what happens as the number of rectangles increases.”
