What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate accumulated area or change using rectangles, trapezoids, and calculator tools. They interpret formulas, graphs, and tables, including data with unequal interval widths.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a suitable method, set up each subinterval correctly, and calculate a reasonable estimate. They can work from a formula, graph, or table and explain how interval width affects accuracy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use function values without multiplying by interval widths. They may assume all intervals have equal width, confuse left and right endpoints, or forget the one-half in the trapezoid formula.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A velocity table gives points (0, 3), (2, 7), and (5, 4). Use trapezoids to estimate distance traveled and include units.

Ways to Teach It
Overlay a graph with transparent interval strips, then cut and arrange rectangles and trapezoids to compare their estimated areas.
Ask students to explain when a left-endpoint sum overestimates or underestimates area, using a labeled increasing-function sketch.
Run a card sort matching graphs, tables, interval widths, Riemann sum setups, trapezoidal setups, and numerical estimates.
Give a table of vehicle speeds over time and have students estimate distance traveled with the Trapezoidal Rule.
