Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.AR.7.4

MathGrades 9–12Solve and graph radical equations and functions in one and two variables.

The Standard

Solve and graph mathematical and real-world problems that are modeled with radical functions. Interpret key features and determine constraints in terms of the context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students translate a situation into a radical equation or function, solve for unknown values, and graph the relationship. They identify endpoints, intercepts, domain, and range, then explain which values make sense in context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students solve radical equations and check each possible solution in the original model. They graph only allowed inputs, label key features, and explain solutions, domain, and range using context and units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may square both sides and keep an extraneous solution without checking it in the original equation. They may ignore restrictions on even-root radicands or confuse an endpoint with an intercept. They may use the full algebraic domain when the context has tighter limits.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A helicopter’s horizon distance is h(a) = 1.22√a miles for altitudes from 0 to 10,000 feet; sketch the graph, state the contextual domain and range, find the altitude when h = 61, and interpret h(0).”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use square tiles to build areas 1, 4, 9, and 16, record side lengths, then plot each ordered pair as (area, side length).

  2. Ask, “How do the endpoint and allowed x-values change from y = √x to y = √(x - 4) + 2?”

  3. Run a card sort matching radical equations, graphs, domains, and solution cards, including several extraneous solutions students must reject.

  4. Model skid-mark speed with v = √(30d), graph realistic distances, and explain what the intercept and domain mean for drivers.
