What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students isolate exponential or logarithmic expressions, rewrite forms when useful, and solve for the variable. They substitute answers into the original equation and decide whether each answer fits the given situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses an efficient method, such as rewriting with a common base, using logarithms, or combining logarithmic terms. The student checks solutions in the original equation and rejects invalid values.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat log(a + b) as log(a) + log(b), or forget that logarithm arguments must be positive. They may keep algebraic roots that fail the original equation or make no sense in context.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A rectangle has sides x and x − 2 and area 8. Solve log₂(x) + log₂(x − 2) = 3, then justify the viable solution.

Ways to Teach It
Sort equation, transformation, and solution cards into complete solution chains, then check each answer in the original equation.
Write a response to: Why can solving a logarithmic equation produce an answer that does not work?
Run a partner relay where each correct exponential or logarithmic solution reveals the next equation card.
Model compound interest or population growth, solve for time, and explain whether negative or fractional time values fit the situation.
