What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find exact values of numerical logarithms by rewriting them in exponential form. They use product, quotient, and power properties to create equivalent expressions and simplify them.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students evaluate expressions such as log₂(32) and connect them to exponential equations. They combine or expand numerical logarithms correctly using product, quotient, and power properties.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat log(a + b) as log(a) + log(b), even though the product rule requires multiplication. They may also mishandle coefficients or confuse the base with the logarithm’s value.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Without a calculator, evaluate log₂(8) + log₂(4) − log₂(2). Rewrite it as one logarithm and name each property used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cards showing logarithmic expressions, exponential forms, and values, then have them build matching sets and justify each match.

  2. Ask students to explain why log(2 + 3) does not equal log(2) + log(3), using numerical estimates as evidence.

  3. Play a relay where teams simplify one logarithmic expression at each station, checking the previous team’s work before moving on.

  4. Give sound intensity ratios and have students calculate decibel levels using 10log₁₀(I/I₀), then compare which sounds are louder.
