What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize geometric series and use the first term, common ratio, and number of terms to find finite sums. They find infinite sums when the ratio has an absolute value less than 1 and apply both formulas to word problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the first term, common ratio, and number of terms from a sequence or context. They choose the correct sum formula, calculate accurately, and explain whether an infinite sum exists.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse the common ratio with the common difference or use the finite formula without identifying the number of terms. They may assume every infinite geometric series has a sum, ignoring the condition that the absolute value of the ratio must be less than 1.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For 12 + 6 + 3 + ..., find the sum of the first five terms and the infinite sum, then explain why the infinite sum exists.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange strips measuring 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1 centimeters, then compare their total with the predicted infinite sum.

  2. Write a response explaining which sum formula fits a given series and how the common ratio supports that choice.

  3. In pairs, draw cards showing a first term, ratio, and term count, then race to calculate each finite sum.

  4. Model a ball dropped from 10 feet that rebounds half its height, then find its total distance after four bounces and indefinitely.
