What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students place fractions on number lines and arrange them from least to greatest. They compare fractions by reasoning about equal-sized parts, not by guessing from the numbers alone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately place fractions, including fractions greater than one, on a number line. They use <, >, or = and explain comparisons using piece size or distance from zero.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a larger denominator always means a larger fraction. They may count number-line marks instead of spaces, or compare only the numerators.

How to Assess It

Give students 3/8, 5/8, 3/4, and 3/6. Ask them to plot each pair, insert < or >, and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips to build 3/4 and 3/8, then have students explain which strip reaches farther and why.

  2. Ask, “Which is greater, 5/6 or 5/8?” Students write a claim and support it with a drawing or number line.

  3. Play Fraction War with cards sharing numerators or denominators, and require each winner to state the comparison using a symbol.

  4. Compare two recipes using 2/3 cup and 2/4 cup of milk, then draw models to decide which recipe uses more.
