What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write for a clear purpose and audience. They organize ideas, add relevant details, choose suitable words, and revise for clarity, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused piece with a clear beginning, logical sequence, and purposeful ending. Details support the main idea, transitions connect ideas, and revisions improve clarity and correctness.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a first draft as finished or list ideas without connecting them. They may add details that do not support the main point, shift tone, or ignore basic conventions.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Write one paragraph explaining a school rule you would change. Include a clear main idea, two relevant details, and a closing sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips from a mixed-up paragraph, then have them arrange the ideas and explain their order.
Ask students to write the same message for a principal and a close friend, then compare word choice and tone.
Run a revision relay where teams improve one weak paragraph for focus, details, transitions, and conventions.
Have students write a clear email requesting information about a club, event, or community program.
