What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan, draft, revise, and edit writing for a clear purpose and audience. They organize ideas, add relevant details, and choose words that make the message easy to follow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused piece with a clear beginning, middle, and ending. Ideas fit the purpose and audience, and details support the main point. The student revises unclear parts and edits common errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list ideas without grouping them or connecting them clearly. They may add details that do not support the main point, skip revision, or confuse editing with revising.
How to Assess It
- Give students 10 minutes to write a paragraph explaining the best classroom job. Check for a clear focus, organized reasons, supporting details, and correct sentences.

Ask students to write: Which school rule should change, and how would that change help students?
Play Revision Relay, where teams improve one weak sentence by adding precise words, details, and a clear connection to the topic.
Have students write a short email to the principal proposing one realistic improvement to the playground, cafeteria, or library.
