What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find places where an author compares unlike things, gives human actions to nonhuman things, or exaggerates. They name the technique and explain what the words mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly labels each technique in a new passage. The student points to key words and explains the image, idea, or feeling the author creates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any comparison as a metaphor, even when it uses "like" or "as." They may read exaggeration literally or identify a human action without explaining what it suggests.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, print: "The playground was a zoo," "The wind whispered," and "My backpack weighs a ton." Ask students to label each technique and explain its meaning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips to sort into metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and literal language, then have them defend one choice.
Ask students to explain what an author means by, "The moon was a flashlight," and rewrite the idea in literal language.
Play Figurative Language Four Corners by reading sentences aloud while students move to the labeled corner matching each technique.
Display three advertising slogans with exaggeration or comparison, then have students explain how the wording makes the product sound appealing.
