What Students Need to Do

Students apply grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling rules when writing. They reread and edit their work so sentences are complete, clear, and correct.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense and correct subject-verb agreement. They use grade-level spelling, capitals, commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks, then edit mistakes independently.

Common Misconceptions

Students may capitalize random words or forget capitals in names and titles. They may confuse plural and possessive nouns, shift verb tense, or omit commas and quotation marks in dialogue.

How to Assess It

Give students three sentences with six errors in capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Ask them to rewrite each sentence correctly and circle every change.

   Give pairs sentence strips with convention errors, then have them cut, rearrange, and replace words or punctuation to correct each sentence.

   Ask students to write four sentences about recess, then trade papers and explain two convention changes to a partner.

3. 03

   Play Convention Detective by projecting one flawed sentence at a time and awarding points for finding and explaining each error.

4. 04

   Have students edit a mock school announcement for spelling, capitals, punctuation, and clear sentences before reading it aloud.
