What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write complete simple sentences using grade-level grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and spacing. They reread their work and correct errors they notice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes complete simple sentences with clear spacing, capitals, and correct end marks. The student uses common plurals, possessives, and matching subjects and verbs. They find and fix errors when rereading.

Common Misconceptions

Students may put a capital at the start of every line instead of every sentence. They may omit spaces or end marks, use apostrophes for plurals, or write mismatched subjects and verbs.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Correct and rewrite, “on monday mias dog jump over logs sticks and rocks.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards, capital letters, commas, and punctuation tiles to build and correct three simple sentences.

  2. Write three sentences about your morning, then explain where you used capitals, spaces, and end marks.

  3. Play Sentence Fix-It: teams correct one error at a time in projected sentences and name the rule they used.

  4. Examine a lunch menu, circle capitals and punctuation, then rewrite one line with correct spacing, grammar, and spelling.
