MathGrades 9–12Interpreting Functions

The standard

Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to rewrite the same function in equivalent forms and explain what each form shows. For quadratics, they should move between standard, factored, and vertex form. For exponential functions, they may rewrite expressions to show growth rate over a different time interval or reveal a starting value.

Mastery means students do not rewrite just for practice. They choose a form because it answers a question, like finding zeros, vertex, intercept, maximum, minimum, or percent growth. Common trouble spots are weak factoring, sign errors when completing the square, and not connecting algebra steps to the graph or situation.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs quadratic cards in three forms and matching graphs, then have them sort and justify each match with one visible feature.
  • Ask students: Which form would you use to find the zeros, vertex, or y-intercept, and why?
  • Use an exit ticket with one quadratic and ask for two equivalent forms plus one fact revealed by each form.
  • Show a phone plan cost or falling object model, then ask which rewritten form best answers a customer or physics question.
