Math4th GradeOperations and Algebraic Thinking

The standard

Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to make sense of word problems and choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. They should represent the situation with equations, drawings, arrays, tape diagrams, or number lines. They also need to handle multi-step problems and explain what each number means.

Mastery looks like matching the operation to the story, not just grabbing key words. Students can write an equation with a variable for the unknown and check if the answer makes sense. Common trouble spots are multi-step problems, remainders, hidden comparisons, and confusing equal groups with comparison situations.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs 24 counters and scenario cards, then have them model, write an equation, and solve each problem.
  • Ask students to write a two-step word problem for 36 ÷ 4, then trade and solve with a partner.
  • Use an exit ticket with one comparison problem, one equal-groups problem, and one two-step problem.
  • Have students plan a class snack budget using prices, quantities, total cost, and leftover money.
