The Standard
Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to back up an argument with reasons that make sense and evidence that actually fits the claim. They should choose facts, quotes, examples, or data from sources that can be trusted, then explain how each piece of evidence proves their point.
Mastery looks like a paragraph or essay where the claim, reasons, and evidence line up clearly. Students do not just drop in a quote. They connect it to the point. Common trouble spots are using weak websites, picking evidence that is only loosely related, and repeating evidence without explaining it.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three source excerpts on school start times and have them sort evidence into strong, weak, and unrelated piles.
- Ask students to write: Which evidence best supports this claim, and how does it prove the point?
- Have students highlight one claim, one reason, one evidence sentence, and one explanation in their draft.
- Show a product review page and discuss which comments give credible evidence and which are just opinions.
