What This Standard Means
Students need to treat writing as a process, not a one-shot assignment. They should plan before drafting, use feedback from a peer or teacher, revise for clearer ideas and stronger organization, edit for grammar and conventions, and sometimes try a different structure or angle when the draft is not working.
Mastery looks like a student explaining what they changed and why. The final piece should be clearer than the first draft. Common sticking points are confusing editing with revising, making only tiny word changes, ignoring feedback, or fixing spelling while leaving weak evidence, unclear paragraphs, or a missing conclusion.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a messy sample paragraph and colored pens to mark one revision for ideas, one for organization, and one edit for conventions.
- Ask students to write, What feedback did I use today, and how did it make my draft stronger?
- Collect first drafts with a revision note and check for one meaningful change beyond spelling or punctuation.
- Show a restaurant menu revision or app update notes, then connect how real writers improve products after feedback.
