What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan, draft, revise, edit, and sometimes rewrite their work with support from peers or adults. They strengthen ideas, organization, clarity, word choice, and grade-level conventions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can plan a draft, use feedback to revise ideas and organization, and edit grade-level conventions. They can explain why a change makes the writing clearer or more effective and can rewrite when small fixes are not enough.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may also believe a first draft must be kept intact, even when changing the structure or approach would improve it.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short draft with weak organization and several convention errors. Ask them to make two revisions for meaning and two edits for correctness, then label each change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed draft, scissors, and tape to cut apart paragraphs and rebuild them in a clearer order.
Ask students to write which single change would most improve a draft and support their choice with evidence from the text.
Run a revision relay where teams rotate through drafts, improving focus, organization, word choice, and conventions at separate stations.
Have students revise unclear school announcements, menus, or instructions so a real audience can understand and use them.
