Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to add strong support to informational writing. They should choose facts, definitions, details, quotes, and examples that clearly connect to the main idea. They also need to explain enough so the reader understands why the information matters.
Mastery looks like a paragraph where every piece of evidence fits the topic and adds something useful. Students often get stuck by listing random facts, dropping in quotes without explanation, or using vague details like “it is interesting.” They may also choose examples that are true but not closely related.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a plain paragraph about volcanoes, then have them add one fact, one definition, one detail, and one example from source cards.
- Ask students to explain which support is strongest for this claim: School gardens help students learn science.
- Use an exit ticket: students write one topic sentence and two related supporting details, then underline the stronger detail.
- Show a short product review and have students identify facts, specific details, and examples that make the review more convincing.
