Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

What This Standard Means

Students need to speak loudly enough for the group to hear and use words that make sense to others. They should be able to share an idea, tell how they feel, answer a question, or explain something simple without hiding their voice or mumbling.

Mastery looks like a child facing the listener, using a clear voice, and saying a complete thought such as, “I felt happy when we read the bear book.” Students often get stuck with one-word answers, very quiet voices, or unclear pronouns like “it” and “that.”

Ways to Teach It

  • Use a whisper, table, and presenter voice chart, then have students practice saying their name and favorite animal to a partner.
  • Ask, “How did the story make you feel, and why?” and have students answer with the sentence frame, “I felt ___ because ___.”
  • During morning meeting, hand each child a picture card and mark if they speak loud enough and share one clear idea.
  • Connect to ordering lunch by practicing, “I would like milk, please,” in a clear voice while facing the listener.
