What This Standard Means

Students need to tell about a person, place, thing, or event so a listener can picture it and understand why it matters. They should include details that fit, such as what it looked like, what happened, who was there, and how they felt.

Mastery sounds like a short, clear oral description with enough detail to answer basic listener questions. Students often get stuck giving one-word answers, listing random facts, or forgetting to say feelings clearly. Some need sentence frames and rehearsal before speaking to the group.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a mystery object bag and have them describe the hidden item by touch before showing it to the class.
  • Ask, "Tell about a place you like. What do you see there, and how do you feel there?"
  • Have each student describe a picture card using three details, then listen for who, what, and feeling words.
  • After a school event, ask students to tell a partner what happened first, who was there, and their favorite part.
