What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students restate information they hear or view using their own words. They keep the original meaning and select key ideas from read-alouds, videos, images, charts, graphs, or oral presentations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can listen to a read-aloud or view a chart, image, video, or presentation and restate key information accurately. They use their own words and include the main idea and relevant details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the speaker's exact words instead of using their own. They may add opinions, leave out the main point, or copy every detail from a chart or video.
How to Assess It
- Read a short paragraph aloud and show a related chart. Ask students to write two sentences that restate the main information from both sources in their own words.

Ways to Teach It
Read a short passage aloud while students build the main idea and details with labeled sentence strips, then explain the arrangement in their own words.
Show a photograph with a caption and ask, "What information does each source give, and how would you restate it?"
Play Paraphrase Relay: teams hear one fact, write it in new words, and check that the meaning stayed the same.
Use a weather forecast video and temperature graph, then have students explain tomorrow's conditions to someone planning an outdoor event.
