What This Standard Means
Students need to listen or view carefully, then restate the main parts in their own words. They should handle a read-aloud, a video clip, a chart, a diagram, or a short oral explanation. They are not just repeating. They are showing what the information means.
Mastery looks like a clear, accurate retell of the key points, with details kept in the right order or grouped sensibly. Students often get stuck by copying exact wording, adding personal opinions, missing numbers from charts, or focusing on one fun detail instead of the main idea.
Ways to Teach It
- Play a one-minute science video, then have students sort sentence strips into main idea, key details, and extra details.
- Ask students to write, “The speaker’s main point was ___, and two details that support it were ___ and ___.”
- Read a short paragraph aloud once, then have students paraphrase it to a partner in 30 seconds.
- Show a simple weather graph and ask students to explain the week’s pattern as if giving a morning announcement.
