What This Standard Means

Students need to show up ready to talk about a shared text, video, article, or topic. They should bring notes, marked pages, or facts they can use during the conversation. They also need to connect what they prepared with what classmates say, not just wait for their turn.

Mastery sounds like, “On page 12, I noticed…” or “That matches what we learned about habitats.” Students often get stuck giving opinions without evidence, repeating others, or staying silent because they did not prepare. Some need sentence stems and a clear note-taking job before discussion.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students bring three sticky notes from the reading, one fact, one question, and one connection, then use them in a small-group talk.
  • Prompt: Write one idea you are ready to share, and the exact page, quote, or fact that helped you think it.
  • Do a one-minute discussion check where each student must share one prepared note and respond to one classmate’s idea.
  • Connect it to planning a class field trip, students read two options first, then discuss using details from the descriptions.
