What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read or study the assigned material before joining a discussion. During the discussion, they use notes, text details, and relevant background knowledge to explain and explore ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students arrive with notes, marked pages, or facts ready to use. They refer to a specific detail and explain how it supports, changes, or extends an idea in the discussion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may complete the reading but bring no notes or marked details, then offer opinions without evidence. Some repeat a fact without explaining its connection, or use prior knowledge instead of the assigned material.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “What did you learn from the assigned text? Explain how one detail helped you respond to a classmate during today’s discussion.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups a short article and sticky notes; students mark two facts, then place each note beside a discussion question.
Ask students to write, “What idea from the reading changed or confirmed your thinking?” and cite one detail before discussing.
Play Evidence Toss: a student answers a question, names a source detail, then passes a beanbag to the next speaker.
Have students prepare for a class meeting about recess rules by reading survey results and bringing one fact to support a suggestion.
