ELA5th GradeComprehension and Collaboration

The Standard

Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to read or study the assigned material before a discussion and bring proof they did the work. They should use notes, page numbers, quotes, facts, and prior knowledge when they speak, not just share opinions.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “On page 12…” or “This reminds me of what we learned about…” and then adding a clear idea or question. Students often get stuck because they come with vague notes, forget to connect their comment to the text, or repeat classmates without adding anything new.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students sticky notes and ask them to mark two facts, one question, and one connection before a small-group discussion.
  • Use the prompt, “What did you read that changed, confirmed, or challenged your thinking?” and require one text reference.
  • During discussion, tally each student once for using a quote, fact, page number, or clear prior knowledge connection.
  • Connect the skill to a team meeting by having students plan a class event using notes from a short information sheet.
