What This Standard Means
Students need to handle grade-level science and technical texts without heavy teacher support. They should track main ideas, technical terms, diagrams, data, procedures, and claims. They also need stamina, since these texts often include dense sentences, unfamiliar vocabulary, and information spread across text features.
Mastery looks like a student reading an article, lab procedure, manual excerpt, or textbook section and explaining what it says, how the parts connect, and what evidence matters. Common trouble spots are skipping diagrams, copying definitions without understanding them, losing the argument in long paragraphs, and giving up when vocabulary gets hard.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a short lab procedure with one missing step, then have them identify the gap and justify where it belongs.
- Ask students to write: Which text feature helped you understand the article most, and what did it clarify?
- Use a one-page technical article and ask students for the main idea, three key terms, and one evidence quote in five minutes.
- Have students read a phone battery safety guide and explain which warning matters most for daily use.
