What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read increasingly complex stories, plays, and poems, then track plot, character, theme, structure, and language. Ninth graders may use targeted supports for harder texts. Tenth graders handle those texts independently.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a challenging text, students summarize accurately, explain key ideas and craft choices, and support interpretations with details. They sustain understanding across a full work and use fewer supports over time.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fluent reading proves comprehension, even when they cannot explain the plot, theme, or language. They may rely on summaries, ignore unfamiliar words, or assume every difficult text has one correct interpretation.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unfamiliar one-page literary passage. Ask, “Write a three-sentence summary, explain one important craft choice, and cite two details supporting your explanation.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a challenging scene cut into sections, then have them sequence it, mark shifts, and justify their order with textual clues.
After reading a poem, ask, “Which line most changes the poem’s meaning, and how?” Students write, then discuss their evidence.
Run a context-clue relay where teams infer difficult words, check definitions, and revise their understanding of each passage.
Compare a complex story excerpt with its film adaptation, then have students explain how each version shapes the audience’s understanding.
