The Standard

Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person's life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account.

What This Standard Means

Students need to compare how the same subject is presented in different forms, such as an article, video, podcast, photo essay, or speech. They should notice what each version includes, leaves out, repeats, or makes more emotional or visual.

Mastery looks like a clear comparison that uses evidence from both sources and explains why the medium affects the message. Students often list differences without explaining their effect, or they focus only on topic, not on emphasis, tone, visuals, sound, pacing, or word choice.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short obituary and a two-minute memorial video, then have them color-code details found in only one version.
  • Ask students to write: Which account makes the subject seem more admirable, and what specific choices create that effect?
  • Use an exit ticket asking students to name one emphasized detail in each source and explain how they know.
  • Compare a news article and TV segment about the same local event, then discuss how images, quotes, and editing shape public reaction.
