What This Standard Means

Students need to figure out what words and phrases mean in the passage, not just from a dictionary. They should use context, word parts, sentence clues, and the topic to decide meaning. They also need to notice figurative language, emotional associations, technical terms, analogies, and allusions.

Mastery looks like a student explaining how one word choice changes the reader’s impression of a person, event, or idea. Common trouble spots are choosing the first dictionary definition, missing sarcasm or tone, and not recognizing references to history, myths, or other texts.

Ways to Teach It

Give students a short article and have them highlight five loaded words, then replace each with a neutral synonym and compare tone.
Ask students to write: Which single word in this paragraph most shapes the author’s attitude, and how do you know?
Use a three-question exit ticket: define one phrase from context, name its tone, and explain one clue that helped.
Bring in a sports column or product review and identify technical terms, emotional words, and any reference readers are expected to know.
