What This Standard Means
Students need to read longer, denser nonfiction and make sense of the main ideas, structure, evidence, vocabulary, and author’s purpose. They should handle essays, speeches, biographies, articles, and historical documents with growing independence.
Mastery looks like a student explaining what the text says, how the author builds the point, and which details matter most. Students often get stuck on unfamiliar background knowledge, long sentences, academic words, and texts where the main idea is implied instead of stated.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a short nonfiction article, sticky notes, and three colors to mark main idea, evidence, and confusing parts.
- Ask students to write: What does the author want me to understand, and which two details prove it?
- Use a one-page exit ticket with a paragraph, one main idea question, one vocabulary question, and one evidence question.
- Bring in a city council notice, product review, or health article and ask students what decisions a reader could make from it.
