What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-appropriate literary nonfiction independently and make sense of its main ideas, details, structure, and vocabulary. They use support, such as chunking or guiding questions, when a text is especially demanding.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can finish a challenging biography, memoir, or essay and accurately explain what it says. The student cites details, tracks the author’s ideas, and handles most unfamiliar words without losing meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fluent oral reading equals comprehension, or that recalling isolated facts is enough. They may skip dense sections, guess unfamiliar words, or rely on summaries instead of returning to the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 500-word memoir excerpt and ask: State the central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain one challenging sentence in your own words.

Give pairs a printed memoir excerpt to cut into sections, label each section’s job, and reassemble in the author’s logical order.
Ask students to write: Which passage was hardest to understand, and what rereading move helped you make sense of it?
Play Evidence Match with cards showing central ideas, details, vocabulary clues, and text structures from a shared biography.
Compare a scientist’s first-person account with a news summary, then discuss which details each version emphasizes and why.
