What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students independently read challenging informational texts from science, history, and technical subjects. They identify main ideas, explain key details, use text features, and work through unfamiliar words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read an unfamiliar, challenging third-grade informational text without teacher help. They give an accurate summary, answer literal and inferential questions, and support answers with details from the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read every word smoothly but miss the main idea. They may copy one sentence as a summary, ignore captions and diagrams, or give up when vocabulary is unfamiliar.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 300-word science passage with a heading and diagram. Ask them to state the main idea, list two supporting details, and explain what the diagram adds.

Ways to Teach It
Students follow a one-page technical text to build a paper helicopter, then mark the words and diagram that helped with each step.
After reading a short history article, students write a two-sentence summary and discuss which details belong in it.
Set up passage stations where students match main idea cards with evidence cards from science, history, and technical texts.
Students read two local weather alerts and choose which outdoor event should be changed, citing details from both alerts.
