CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2a
The Standard
Recognize and produce rhyming words.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to hear when two words rhyme and say a word that rhymes with a given word. They are listening for the ending sound pattern, not the first sound or the meaning. They should be able to tell if cat and hat rhyme, and give another word like bat.
Mastery looks like quick, confident sorting, matching, and producing rhymes during songs, read-alouds, and word play. Students often get stuck by matching words with the same beginning sound, like cat and cup, or by choosing words that are related in meaning but do not rhyme.
Ways to Teach It
- Use picture cards for cat, hat, dog, log, sun, and bed, and have students make rhyme pairs on a pocket chart.
- Ask, “What rhymes with moon?” then have students turn and tell a partner one real word or silly word.
- Say three words, like pig, wig, sun, and have students show thumbs up when they hear the two that rhyme.
- Read a familiar rhyming book, then pause before the rhyming word so students can predict the word aloud.
