ELA1st GradePhonics and Word Recognition

The Standard

Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to look at a printed word, find the vowel sounds, and use them to count syllables. They are not just clapping spoken words. They connect what they hear to what they see in the word.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “rabbit has two vowel sounds, so it has two syllables,” then marking the parts correctly. Students often count vowel letters instead of vowel sounds, especially with silent e, vowel teams, and words like cake, rain, or boat.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs word cards and highlighters, then have them mark vowel sounds and sort words into one, two, and three syllable piles.
  • Ask students to explain, “How do you know this word has one syllable or two syllables?” using a word from the board.
  • Show five printed words, have students hold up fingers for the number of syllables, then quickly justify one answer.
  • Use student names, lunch menu words, or classroom labels, and have students find the vowel sounds to count syllables.
