Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to hear a one-syllable spoken word and say its first sound, middle vowel sound, and last sound. They are working with sounds, not letters, so words like fish, dog, sun, and cake should be spoken aloud before any print is shown.

Mastery looks like a child saying /m/, /ă/, /p/ for map without adding extra sounds like “muh.” Common trouble spots are hearing the middle vowel, separating blends, and confusing letter names with sounds. Stretching words slowly and using counters helps.

Ways to Teach It

  • Use three Elkonin boxes and counters as students push one counter for each sound in words like cat, ship, and rope.
  • Ask, “What sound do you hear first, in the middle, and last in moon?” then have students explain how they heard it.
  • Say five one-syllable words and have students hold up one, two, or three fingers to show the sound position you ask for.
  • Use lunch words like milk, chip, peach, and soup, and have students name the first, middle vowel, and last sounds.
