What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how wording, sentence structure, and tone change across audiences, purposes, and settings. They choose and revise language for clear meaning and suitable style, then explain how language choices shape what readers or listeners understand.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given one message, a student can write versions suited to different audiences and purposes. When reading a passage or hearing a speech, the student can identify specific choices and explain their effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think formal language is always better, or that replacing a word with any synonym preserves meaning. They may label tone from one word and ignore sentence structure, punctuation, connotation, audience, or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite “The new phone rule is unfair” for a friend and for the principal. Circle two language choices and explain how the audience shaped each one.

Give pairs printed versions of one request, then have them sort by audience and highlight wording that signals each context.
Ask students to rewrite a complaint for a friend and a principal, then explain which version sounds more effective and why.
Play Context Switch: students draw audience and purpose cards, revise one sentence, and earn a point for explaining each change.
Compare a school email with a social media post about the same event, and list choices that fit each setting.
