What This Standard Means
Students need to notice how word choice, sentence structure, tone, and formality shift by audience, purpose, and situation. They should explain why a writer or speaker made those choices and try similar choices in their own writing.
Mastery looks like a student revising a sentence, paragraph, or speech so the meaning and style fit the task. Students often get stuck naming vague effects like “sounds better.” Push them to say what changed, who the audience is, and how the change affects clarity, tone, or impact.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students the same message as a text, email, and announcement, then have them revise each for a different audience.
- Ask students to explain which version of a sentence fits a college essay, a speech, or a group chat, and why.
- Show two short paragraph revisions and ask students to circle the stronger choices and write one reason for each.
- Bring in a school handbook rule and have students rewrite it as a parent email, student poster, and principal announcement.
