What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students adjust words, sentence patterns, and tone to fit the audience, purpose, and setting. They explain how a language choice shapes meaning and use context to interpret what they read or hear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given the same message for a friend and a principal, students produce versions that fit each audience. They point to specific words or sentence patterns and explain how these choices change tone, clarity, or emphasis.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat formal language as always better, rather than matching language to the situation. They may change vocabulary but overlook sentence structure, tone, or emphasis. They may label wording as “strong” without explaining its effect.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite “Give me the form now” for a principal and for a close friend. Underline one change in each version and explain what it does.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from texts, emails, and conversations to sort by audience, purpose, and level of formality.

  2. Ask students to write one request for a classmate and one for the principal, then explain three wording changes.

  3. Play Tone Swap: teams draw an audience card and revise the same sentence to match it, earning points for justified choices.

  4. Compare a store sign, customer email, and advertisement, then identify how each uses language to influence a different reader.
