What This Standard Means
Students need to notice how word choice, sentence structure, tone, and form change depending on purpose, audience, and situation. They should be able to explain why a writer or speaker chose certain language and try out different choices in their own reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Mastery looks like flexible control. Students can revise a sentence for a formal letter, explain how slang shapes a character’s voice, or tell how repetition affects a speech. They often get stuck naming features without explaining the effect, or they make language changes that do not fit the audience or purpose.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three versions of the same message and have them sort, label, and revise each for a new audience.
- Ask students to write one request to a friend, a principal, and a job supervisor, then explain their language choices.
- Show a short paragraph and ask students to circle two language choices and write the effect of each.
- Bring in a restaurant review, text message, and job email, then compare how language changes for audience and purpose.
