Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to sort close-meaning words by how strong they are. They should explain the difference between words like knew, believed, suspected, heard, and wondered. They also need to choose the best word for a sentence based on the clue words and the situation.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “Suspected means you have a clue, but you are not sure,” and using it correctly in writing. Students often get stuck treating related words as exact synonyms. They may also miss context clues that show confidence, doubt, or uncertainty.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs word cards like knew, believed, suspected, heard, wondered, and have them place them on a certainty line from least sure to most sure.
  • Ask students to revise this sentence with three different certainty words: “Maya ___ the dog took her sandwich,” then explain each change.
  • Read five short sentences aloud and have students hold up 1, 2, or 3 fingers to show how certain the character is.
  • Use weather forecasts, mystery clues, or sports predictions to compare words like knew, guessed, suspected, and wondered.
