ELA3rd GradeVocabulary Acquisition and Use

The Standard

Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe people who are friendly or helpful).

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to connect vocabulary words to real people, places, actions, and situations they know. They should not only define a word, but also give a clear example of where it fits in life, like naming someone who is generous or a time they felt curious.

Mastery looks like using the word correctly in a real context and explaining why it fits. Students often get stuck by giving a synonym instead of an example, using the word in a vague sentence, or choosing an example that does not match the word’s meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students word cards like brave, patient, and careless, then have them sort photo cards or classroom scenarios under the best match.
  • Ask, “Who is someone you know who is dependable, and what do they do that shows it?”
  • Exit ticket: choose one word from today and write one real-life example that proves you understand it.
  • Read a school notice or menu together, then pick three words and connect each to something students see or do at school.
