CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.5c
The Standard
Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at home that are cozy).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to connect words to real things, places, actions, and feelings they know. They should hear or read a word, then name where they have seen it, felt it, used it, or noticed it in daily life.
Mastery looks like a child saying, “My blanket is cozy,” or “The lunchroom is noisy,” and explaining why the word fits. Students often get stuck giving a definition only, or naming an unrelated example because they know the word but cannot tie it to experience.
Ways to Teach It
- Place picture cards around the room, then have students match word cards like cozy, bright, sticky, and noisy to real objects or spots.
- Ask students to finish the sentence, “A place I know that is ___ is ___ because ___.”
- Show one word, such as bumpy, and have students draw or name one real-life example in 30 seconds.
- Take a short school walk and have students point out places that are quiet, crowded, shiny, or warm.
