ELA3rd GradeKnowledge of Language

The Standard

Recognize and observe differences between the conventions of spoken and written standard English.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to notice that people often speak in ways that do not match formal writing. They should be able to hear a sentence, tell whether it sounds like talk or school writing, and revise it when needed for a written piece.

Mastery looks like choosing language that fits the situation. A student might say, “Me and Jay went,” in conversation, but write, “Jay and I went.” Students often get stuck because spoken patterns feel correct, especially with pronouns, contractions, incomplete sentences, and casual words like gonna or kinda.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs sentence strips with casual speech and have them rewrite each one as a polished sentence for a class book review.
  • Ask students to write two versions of the same message, one to a friend and one to the principal.
  • Read five short sentences aloud and have students mark S for speech or W for writing on mini whiteboards.
  • Show a text message and a school email about the same event, then have students circle words that change for the audience.
