CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4e
The Standard
Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to use a glossary or beginner dictionary to find what a word means, not just guess from the sentence. They should know how to use alphabetical order, guide words, entry words, simple definitions, and sometimes pictures or example sentences.
Mastery looks like a student choosing the right source, finding the word, reading the definition, and using it to explain the word in context. Common snags are weak alphabetizing, stopping at the first close-looking word, copying the whole definition, or picking a meaning that does not fit the sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a picture book glossary and sticky notes, then have them find five bold words and match each to its definition.
- Ask students to write: How did the dictionary help you understand the word habitat in this sentence?
- Show three words on the board and have students circle which page range or guide words would include each word.
- Have students use a kids' weather website glossary to define forecast, then use it in a sentence about tomorrow's weather.
