CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.5a
The Standard
Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to group words by shared meaning. They should notice what makes items belong together, like red, blue, and yellow are color words, while shirt, pants, and socks are clothing words. They also need to explain their thinking in simple words.
Mastery looks like sorting familiar words or picture cards into a named group and adding another word that fits. Students often get stuck when a word could fit more than one group, or when they sort by first letter or sound instead of meaning.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs picture cards for food, animals, colors, and clothing, then have them sort and label each group with a sticky note.
- Ask, "Why do these words go together?" and have students finish the sentence, "They are all ____ because ____."
- Show four words, three from one category and one oddball, then ask students to circle the word that does not fit.
- Bring in a grocery store flyer and have students sort cut-out items into groups like fruit, drinks, snacks, and cleaning supplies.
