What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how inherited differences affect which organisms survive and reproduce. They use models or data to show how trait frequencies shift across generations and why some populations die out.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a helpful inherited trait from a random mutation to greater reproductive success and increased frequency in a population. They can support predictions with environmental evidence rather than saying organisms changed because they needed to.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think individual organisms evolve, choose useful traits, or pass on traits gained during life. They may also think every mutation is harmful and extinction happens only after sudden disasters.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A heritable color mutation makes some beetles harder for birds to see. Explain how the beetle population could change after many generations.
