What Students Need to Do

Students explain how heat from deep inside Earth makes mantle material move slowly. They use a model to show warmer material rising and cooler material sinking.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can draw and label a convection cycle inside Earth. The student connects that slow movement to changes in Earth’s crust.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the mantle is completely liquid or moves quickly like boiling water. They may think cool material rises and warm material sinks.

How to Assess It

Give students a mantle diagram with arrows. Ask them to label warmer and cooler material, then explain what causes the movement in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place warm water below cool colored water in a clear container, then observe and sketch the movement as a convection model.

  2. Ask students to write: How can heat deep inside Earth cause material near the crust to move?

  3. Give pairs arrow cards, temperature cards, and density cards to arrange into a correct convection cycle, then check another pair’s model.

  4. Compare a map of plate boundaries with earthquake and volcano locations, then discuss how movement below the crust helps explain the patterns.
