What Students Need to Do: Students find the overall push or pull when forces act in different directions. They explain that a larger overall force produces a larger motion change, while greater mass produces a smaller change under the same force.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given force arrows and object masses, a student predicts which object will speed up, slow down, stop, or turn more. The student supports the prediction using both overall force and mass.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think balanced forces mean an object must be stopped, rather than moving without a change in speed or direction. They may add opposing forces or ignore mass when comparing motion changes.
How to Assess It: Draw two carts with masses of 1 kg and 3 kg, each pushed by a net force of 2 N. Ask which cart changes speed more and why.

Lesson moves

Load two toy carts with different masses, pull each with the same stretched rubber band, and compare their speed changes.
Ask students to explain why an empty shopping cart responds differently from a full cart when pushed with equal force.
Play a card sort where students match force arrows and masses to predictions about speeding up, slowing down, stopping, or turning.
Have students compare pushing an empty classroom bin and a loaded bin, then explain the difference using force and mass.
