What Students Need to Do: Students identify organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems in a given setting. They explain how living things depend on other organisms and on water, air, soil, and sunlight.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly group organisms of one species as a population and multiple populations as a community. They can trace how a change in one part affects other parts of an ecosystem.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every group of animals a population, even when the animals are different species. They may also leave nonliving parts out of an ecosystem or assume organisms live independently.
How to Assess It: Give students a pond diagram with fish, frogs, plants, water, rocks, and sunlight. Ask them to label one population, the community, and two relationships.

Lesson moves

Use organism cards, yarn, and labels to build a classroom food web that includes sunlight, water, plants, herbivores, and predators.
Ask students to write what might happen to a meadow community if its insect population suddenly decreased.
Play Ecosystem Match by having students pair organism cards with food, shelter, or environmental resources they need.
Survey a schoolyard tree, recording its organisms and nonliving features, then explain three connections found around it.
