What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a clear question about a familiar situation that can be answered by gathering data. They decide what responses or objects to collect and name up to four categories for sorting them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear question that can be answered by collecting and counting responses or objects. The student names sensible answer choices and explains what information to gather.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask a question with one known answer, such as “What color is the rug?” They may also use unclear or overlapping choices, or ask “why” questions that cannot be answered by counting responses.
How to Assess It
- Say, “Our class is choosing a read-aloud.” Have each student dictate a question with three book choices that the class could answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs four bins and animal counters, then have them create a question that can be answered by sorting the animals.
Ask, “What could we ask to learn about our class pets?” Record questions, then identify which ones produce countable answers.
Play Question Fix-It with cards showing unclear survey questions, and let teams revise each card into a question with clear choices.
Plan a class snack vote by having students propose a question, choose four snack options, and name whose responses should be collected.
