What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a class survey question about a given topic. The question must produce answers that can be counted and sorted into up to four clear choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a context such as classroom snacks, a student writes, “Which snack do you prefer: apples, crackers, cheese, or yogurt?” The student can explain who will answer and what data will be recorded.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask a question with one known answer, such as “How many legs does a dog have?” They may offer overlapping choices, too many choices, or choices unrelated to the topic.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Our class is planning a read-aloud. Write one question we could ask classmates, with no more than four answer choices.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out four fruit picture cards, then have pairs write one survey question and collect answers from ten classmates with tally marks.
Compare “What is your favorite pet?” and “How many legs does a dog have?” and ask which gathers class data and why.
Play Question Sort: students place cards under “collect data” or “one known answer,” then revise one card from the second group.
Ask students to help choose a recess game by writing a survey question with four pictured options for the class to answer.
