What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify two smaller groups within a set of five or fewer. They name each part and explain that the two parts make the total, even when objects are rearranged.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student sees two red counters and three yellow counters and says, "Two and three make five," without recounting every counter. The student names other splits for the same total and recognizes them when spacing, color, or position changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count the total correctly but name the larger part as the whole. They may think a new arrangement makes a new number. Some know one split, such as 2 and 2 for 4, but do not recognize 1 and 3.

How to Assess It

Show dot cards for 4 split as 1 and 3, then 5 split as 2 and 3 in a different layout. Ask, "Name the two parts and the whole on each card."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students five two-color counters to shake, spill, and name each part and the whole after every spill.

  2. Show four dots split into two groups and ask, "What are the parts and whole? How do you know?"

  3. Play Make Five: students match picture cards showing different part pairs with the same whole.

  4. Ask students to divide five classroom pencils between two cups, then name the amount in each cup and the total.
