Virginia SOL 8.PFA.2.b
The Standard
Identify the domain and range of a function represented as a set of ordered pairs, a table, or a graph of discrete points.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will determine whether a given relation is a function and determine the domain and range of a function.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students separate input values from output values in several representations. They connect x-coordinates to the domain and y-coordinates to the range, listing each value only once.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly lists x-values as the domain and y-values as the range. The student includes only shown values, removes duplicates, and uses braces accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may swap the domain and range or confuse x-values with y-values. They may list repeated values more than once. On discrete graphs, they may include values between plotted points.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For {(-3, 2), (0, 5), (4, 2), (6, 7)}, list the domain and range, and explain why 2 appears once.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups ordered-pair cards; students place x-values in a domain hoop and y-values in a range hoop, removing duplicates.
Show the same data as a table and discrete graph; ask students to explain why both produce identical domain and range sets.
Play Domain-Range Match: students pair cards showing a discrete graph, its domain set, and its range set.
Use a table of daily temperatures at selected times; students list measured times as the domain and recorded temperatures as the range.
