What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which rational number is greater, less, or equal when the numbers appear in different forms. They order up to four values and explain their reasoning with conversions, benchmarks, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately compare positive and negative values written in different forms. They can order four values and defend the result with equivalent forms, benchmarks, or a number line.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a negative number with larger digits is greater, such as claiming -8 is greater than -3. They may compare unlike forms without converting them, or treat 25% as 25 instead of 0.25.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to order -1 1/2, -1.45, -140%, and -1.375 from least to greatest. Require two methods and a one-sentence justification.

Ways to Teach It
Place cards labeled -3/4, -0.6, 25%, and 1 1/2 on a taped floor number line, then explain each placement.
Ask: Which is greater, -0.7 or -65%? Defend your answer using a benchmark and an equivalent form.
Play a four-card ordering race; teams earn a point only when every comparison symbol and explanation is correct.
Rank sale discounts labeled 1/4 off, 0.30 off, 20% off, and 35% off, then identify the best deal.
